What is Aimovig?

Aimovig is the brand name for erenumab, a monoclonal antibody designed to block the CGRP (calcitonin gene-related peptide) protein, which plays a significant role in triggering migraine attacks.

Available in the UK as prefilled autoinjector pens or syringes, Aimovig is administered via a subcutaneous injection (under the skin) once a month.

Aimovig is intended solely as a preventative treatment for adults aged 18 and over. It’s not recommended for treating acute migraine attacks. Like any medication, it may cause side effects. Only use with a medical prescription.

Aimovig Storage Temperature & Instructions

According to Medicines.org.uk, Aimovig should be stored at refrigerator temperatures of C to 8°C.

When refrigeration is not possible, it can be kept at room temperature, below 25°C for up to seven days. Once it has reached room temperature, Aimovig should not be returned to the refrigerator.

Always keep the autoinjector in its original packaging to protect it from light, heat, and damage. Never freeze Aimovig, as freezing destroys its molecular structure and renders it ineffective.

What Happens If Aimovig Isn’t Refrigerated?

If Aimovig is left unrefrigerated beyond seven days, it starts degrading and may lose its effectiveness. Discard any injections that's been out of the fridge for longer than recommended, or showing signs of cloudiness, discolouration, or particles, as these indicate the medication has deteriorated.

How Long Can Aimovig Be Out of the Fridge?

Aimovig can safely stay out of the fridge for up to 7 days, provided it's never exposed to temperatures above 25°C.

What happens if you put it back in the refrigerator?

According to the manufacturer, Aimovig should not be stored back in the refrigerator once it has reached room temperature.

Temperature fluctuations can cause the medicine to expire or deteriorate quicker than it should. So, once you've taken it out of the fridge, keep it a room temperature and use it within 7 days.

What happens if Aimovig gets warm?

Exposure to temperatures above 25°C, even if brief, can make your medicine go bad and render it ineffective or even unsafe for use.

Never let Aimovig above 25°C. Never leave your pens or syringes near heat sources or in direct sunlight. If you're living in or travelling to hot climates, make sure your Aimovig injections are carried in a medical-grade travel cooling case, like the ones from 4AllFamily UK.
