How to Use Your Cooler

How to Use Your Nomad Insulin Travel Case

The Nomad travel cooling cases for insulin and medications are straightforward to use. Just follow these steps:

  1. Prepare the Biogel Cooling Pack: Shake the Biogel cooling pack four or five times to ensure the gel is evenly distributed.
  2. Freeze the Cooling Pack: Place the Biogel cooling pack in the freezer for 6–8 hours. Don’t worry if it stays frozen for longer—it’s completely fine!
  3. Activate the Cooling Pack: Submerge the frozen Biogel cooling pack in lukewarm tap water for 2–3 minutes. This removes the frost layer and prevents the risk of freezing your medicine. No lukewarm water available? Simply leave it at room temperature for 15–20 minutes instead. The warm water method is more efficient, especially in different seasonal conditions.
  4. Dry and Load your Medication: Towel-dry the Biogel cooling pack and place it into the insulated cooling case along with your insulin or medication.
  5. Secure the Lid: Firmly close the lid. Job done!

Frequently asked questions

How Long Does The Travel Cooling Case Keep Insulin And Medications Refrigerated?

The Medium Travel Cooling Case keeps insulin and medications refrigerated (2–8°C) for up to 30 hours in 30°C ambient heat, and up to 26 hours at 40°C.

The Big Travel Cooling Case performs slightly better — staying cold for up to 33 hours at 30°C.

Both sizes will also keep medications below 26°C for up to 48–52 hours, so you can rely on them for trips away of a few days or more.

Is The Nomad Cooling Case Safe To Use In Extreme Heat, Like On A Beach Or In A Hot Car?

Absolutely — the Nomad Travel Cooling Case for Insulin & Medications is built to handle challenging outdoor conditions with ease.

Even at 40°C, the Medium Nomad will keep your insulin at a safe fridge temperature for up to 26 hours, and the Big Nomad for up to 28 hours.

That said, like any passive cooling case, it'll perform at its best when kept out of direct sunlight and away from extreme heat sources.

How Many Insulin Pens Fit In The Nomad Travel Cooling Case?

It depends on the size and your insulin pen brand.

The Medium Travel Cooling Case holds up to 3 pens of many common insulin brands in the UK (Lantus, NovoRapid, Toujeo, Actrapid) and up to 2 pens of wider formats (Tresiba, Levemir, Humalog).

The Big Travel Cooling Case holds up to 7 pens of most standard formats and up to 6 pens of the wider ones.

🔍 Check the full compatibility list on the product page for your specific insulin pen. If you're not sure, contact our support team for personalised advice.

Can I Use The Nomad Cooling Cases For GLP-1 Injections Like Ozempic, Wegovy, And Mounjaro?

Yes, absolutely! The Nomad Travel Cooling Cases are fully compatible with GLP-1 weight-loss and diabetes injections available in the UK, including Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, Saxenda, Trulicity, and Victoza.

🔍 Always check the specific fit using the size guide on the product page, as pen dimensions can vary by brand and country. If you're not sure whether your medication is compatible, feel free to contact our support team for personalised advice.

My Medication Is Not On The List. Can I Still Use The Nomad Cooling Case?

The Nomad Travel Cooling Case is compatible with a wide range of biologics and autoimmune medications available in the UK, including Humira, Dupixent (200 mg and 300 mg), Enbrel, Cosentyx, Kevzara, Benlysta, Nucala, Fasenra, and many others.

🔍 Storage capacity varies by pen size — check the exact product dimensions and the detailed compatibility list on the product images, or feel free to contact our support team for personalised guidance.

What Is The Difference Between The Medium And Big Nomad?

The main difference is storage capacity and internal dimensions.

The Medium Nomad Case (24 cm tall, 6.5 cm diameter) holds fewer pens and is ideal for those carrying 1–3 injections.

The Big Nomad Case (22.5 cm tall, 8.5 cm diameter) offers nearly double the internal space, making it a great choice for longer trips or if you're managing multiple medications. It also keeps things cool for marginally longer.

What Is The Difference Between The Nomad and The Nomad PRO Cooling Cases?

The Nomad Pro Insulin Cooling Case includes everything the Nomad offers, with one key upgrade: a built-in digital temperature display that shows the internal temperature in real time.

If knowing your medication's exact temperature gives you peace of mind, the Nomad Pro is well worth the upgrade. If you're happy with the proven Biogel system and prefer a simpler, more affordable option, the standard Nomad is an excellent choice.

The Nomad Pro also comes with a handy carry bag, offering extra insulation and scratch protection.

Is The Biogel Cooling Pack Safe For Medical Use?

The Biogel Cooling Packs included with our medical coolers use a non-toxic natural gel with a freezing point of 2°C.

Unlike standard water-based ice packs (which freeze at 0°C and can damage medication on contact), the Biogel physically cannot drop below that threshold, eliminating any risk of freezing your insulin or medication.

Our Biogel Cooling Packs are reusable for unlimited cooling cycles.

Does The Nomad Travel Cooling Case Require Electricity To Keep Medications Cool?

No — the Nomad requires no electricity, USB connection, or batteries whatsoever.

It works entirely through passive cooling using the included Biogel Cooling Pack, making it ideal for hiking, camping, beach days, or long-haul flights where power access is limited.

💡For USB-powered medical travel coolers, have a look at our other coolers and mini fridges, like the Voyager, Voyager Mini, Pioneer, Pioneer PRO, or the Explorer.

Is There A Thermometer Or Temperature Display On The Nomad Cooling Case?

No. The Nomad Travel Cooling Case for Insulin & Medications does not include a built-in thermometer or temperature display. It is designed for simplicity — its Biogel technology passively maintains a safe fridge temperature range without needing a screen to confirm it.

💡If real-time temperature monitoring matters to you, have a look at the upgraded Nomad Pro, which features a digital temperature display.

Is The Nomad Approved For Air Travel? Can I Pack It In My Hand Luggage?

Yes, absolutely! The Nomad Travel Cooling Case is fully approved for airport security and can be carried through in your hand luggage — whether you're flying from a UK airport, within the EU, or on international routes.

💡Always carry your medication alongside your cooler to show that it's being used for medical purposes.

Can I Use This Cooler For Open, In-Use Insulin Kept At Room Temperature?

It depends on your insulin or medication's specific storage instructions.

The Nomad is engineered to maintain refrigerated temperatures (2–8°C), which may be too cold for some types and brands of open, in-use insulin or medication that should be kept cool but not refrigerated after opening.

💡For transporting open insulin and medications protected from heat without full refrigeration, we'd recommend the Rambler single-pen cooler, the Rambler PRO, or the Chillers cool pouches instead.

How Do I Get Extra Cooling Time Beyond 33 Hours?

Simply pick up additional Biogel Cooling Packs from 4AllFamily and swap them out once the first pack warms up.

Pop the used pack back in the freezer while the second one is doing its job, and you've got continuous, uninterrupted refrigeration — perfect for longer trips or travelling without reliable freezer access.

What Is The Return And Warranty Policy For The Nomad?

Not happy with your cooling case? No worries — you've got 30 days from delivery to request a return. Have a look at our return policy page for the full details.

Your Nomad Travel Cooling Case also comes with a 1-year warranty, and if you'd like a bit of extra peace of mind, you can add up to 3 more years of cover at checkout for a small fee.

We cover all defects and malfunctions — just not scratches, everyday wear, or accidental damage.

And of course, our Lifetime Customer-Oriented Support team is always on hand — just give us a shout, whatever you need.
